Sad News From 1step

Almost 2 weeks ago we heard the tragic news that Alex, one of our riders for the upcoming ride had passed away during his break from Afghanistan and whilst in Europe. Today in Perth his family and friends said their good byes and our thoughts are with everyone who knew Alex. Although one of Scott's closet mates the 1step team never had the opportunity of meeting Alex in person, however his huge heart, generosity and incredible nature was clear simply through the incredible work he did for 1step1life. We are currently working on a way to ensure his memory and hard work lives on in Cambodia. The bike ride was designed to generate the money to make the dreams of others come true, Alex doesn't have the opportunity to live out his dreams, but his incredible kindness and passion has certainly made that possible for many others.

There’s little that can be done in a situation like this but if we all take the opportunity to remember Alex now and in the future, we will be doing all we can.

Sad news for Siem Reap

Some sad news that we received Monday night. There has been a big storm in Siem Reap and our school has been destroyed. Luckily the workers got away from the structure before it collapsed. Son is not hurt although very sad. Unfortunately many of the villagers homes have also been lost and there is some news of some serious injuries. Our friends and scholarship students from Angkor Kids Centre are all ok although many houses have been destroyed in that area also Pheakdey will continue to keep in contact with all our friends of 1step and provide any necessary support.

All our thoughts and love are with them all.

School Construction Surges Ahead

The last few weeks has seen rapid advancements with our school construction in Prey Thmei Village. It has been fantastic to see the our people on the ground surging ahead with rapid rates of construction. Clearly driven by a desire to get this school built so we can start providing the incredible kids in the area a happy, safe and free English education to the 5 surrounding villages. Proof of how a simple first step can turn into a life changing experience for so many people.

Jenny Our Education Coordinator Shows Off Her Moves

We at 1step1life believe having fun is one of the most important elements of charity work. Jake, Jenny and Pheakdey were invited to a community dinner on our school land, by Son, to celebrate the achievements of the land construction starting. After dinner, Jenny couldn't help but get her dance on and when it got a bit darker Jake and Jenny led the group of kids in the Macarena. An awesome night that won't be forgotten in a rush! Check out Jenny's dance moves below :)

In April Jenny, our Education Coordinator with help from Jake, conducted extensive teacher training, for the dedicated teachers of the Angkor Kids Centre. The teachers range from 15- 27 all giving their time to give back to their community to provide English to the kids of the village.

The heat was extreme so they were very appreciative of the effort that Jenny made...... even playing What's the time Mr Wolf.....

Providing classrooms for free English education at Prey Threy Village

The Land was purchased by 1step, the fence completed by great help from the local community and now the material is being bought for construction of two classrooms. In partnership with Son from Cambodian Organisation for Social Development ( COSD) it is great that we can help expand the provision of free English education to children of the village and in many cases help stop the poverty cycle in their family .
